I just wanted to do a few more birdies

Esther Henseleit

From the moment she turned professional in 2018, Esther Henseleit was destined to achieve great things.

As an amateur she climbed into the Top 10 of the World Amateur Golf Ranking, secured her card for the Ladies European Tour with a third place at the Qualifying School final and reached an official handicap of +7.1 - at that point the lowest handicap ever registered in Europe. She didn’t have to wait long to have similar success at the next level.

Her first win as a professional came in June 2019 at the Skaftö Open on the LET Access Series. At this point she had already accumulated four Top 5 finishes on the main LET circuit. After two more second placed finishes she finally came through in the last tournament of the year. Her win at the Magical Kenya Ladies Open (a title she successfully defended in 2022) not only gave Esther her first win on the LET, with it she also won the Order of Merit and secured honors as Rookie of the Year - a double achievement only two women prior to her were able to accomplish.

With her LET status secured for the next seven years, Esther took aim at her next goal: the LPGA Tour. Despite having to enter Q-School at the second stage, she was able to secure her LPGA Tour card after 12 gruelling rounds of golf. But then her rapid ascend was halted by the Covid pandemic. While Esther was regrouping at her parents’ home in Northern Germany, her dream of representing her country at the Olympic Games in Tokyo slipped away. Having virtually secured the qualification for 2020, the postponement of the Olympics to 2021 saw her miss one of the two German qualification spots. But redemption came in a way she herself didn’t even dare to dream of.
Having secured the playing privileges on the LPGA Tour ever since her rookie season, she started to make her mark overseas. In 2021 she had three top-5 finishes on the LPGA Tour, before 2022 saw her first top-3 result at the AmazingCre Portland Classic and in 2023 she was runner-up at the ISPS Handa World Invitational. One year later Esther was finally ready for the biggest stages in golf. Prior to 2024 she only had made one cut at the Majors. Not only did she triple that number, all three times she appeared on the first pages of the leaderboard. A 14th place at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and 7th place finishes at the Chevron Championship and the Amundi Evian Championship gave her the confidence she could compete with anybody in the world. An attitude that bore fruit at the Olympic Games in Paris.

On the demanding course of Le Golf National, Esther made 22 birdies - more than anybody else in the field - and finished like a true Champion. With an almost flawless 66 in her final round she managed to erase a five-stroke deficit to the medal positions and ended up winning the silver medal, fulfilling the dream she had to give up three years earlier. The first medal for a female golfer from Europe catapulted her to a career best 42nd place in the Rolex Rankings and on the brink of another dream of hers: representing Europe at the Solheim Cup.
